Cisco CREATE team to support Hackout – Manchester

We are excited to reveal a new and welcome collaborator on TravelSpirit’s first Hackout franchise event. Cisco CREATE (part of their UK and Ireland business) are supporting the event in the context of three major initiatives the Cisco CREATE team are already delivering in Manchester (UK), in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).

The first is CityVerve, Cisco’s global Internet of Things (IoT) city demonstrator project, where TfGM has developing strong sustainable transport orientated challenge themes around the navigability of cities, electric bike sharing, talkative bus stops and sensing trams. Cisco is collaborating with other TravelSpirit affiliates BT, Sparta Digital and Republic of Things on projects that begin to address these challenges. Alongside the delivery of these projects, there is a lot more that the team have identified could be done through Cisco CREATE’s Open Innovation programme, with TravelSpirit’s Hackout-Manchester now integrated into this.

The second is Cisco’s new partnership with TfGM, Movement Strategies, Purple, Proxama and TravelSpirit affiliate partner Simply Connect on an InnovateUK funded project, CitySpire. The project is creating a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled demand aggregation service that presents groups of passengers to transport operators. This will be achieved by the AI consuming location-based data from two communications (Bluetooth Low Energy and Wi-Fi) network operators and using these networks as a method for recruiting passengers to shared transport services.

Cisco’s interest in TravelSpirit Foundation is also part of a wider ‘Northern Powerhouse’ initiative, called the ConcentriCity Alliance, that they have set up with the support of the TravelSpirit Foundation and TfGM. The alliance has been formed to strengthen the UK’s commercialisation capability in the area of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles. The alliance has joined up relevant expertise drawn from Northern Robotics Network, Northern Automotive Alliance, Transport for The North and Tech North members.

Cisco CREATE’s new affiliation with TravelSpirit Foundation gives the London and Manchester based team the opportunity to disseminate to its global business practices the latest information and networks surrounding the Mobility as a Service (MaaS) market opportunity. The integration of the Cisco CREATE’s Open Innovation programme into the Hackout – Manchester event provides a pathway for TravelSpirit Foundation community members to develop their business plans and secure investment for their new mobility service concepts.

Cisco is a market-leading IT company. It is leading the transition to a network-centric technology environment. The company is creating a powerful communications platform that will serve as the basis for the convergence of data, voice, video and mobile communications in a secure, integrated architecture. Cisco is a market leader in IoT, developing flexible, scalable networks to connect the unconnected.

Successful delivery of ongoing Innovate UK-funded CR&D projects has increased Cisco’s global corporate development investment in the UK. Cisco UK has secured funding for projects to the value of $32m for Cisco and its partners. This has increased Cisco’s employment of UK talent, creating 3 additional jobs for each Cisco employee in the team. Both Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and Connected & Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) are critical verticals for the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). These are key technology trends and solution areas for Cisco, enabling additional investment for UK development to be drawn down internally.
